門司港レトロは、関門海峡に面する福岡県北九州市門司区にある観光スポット。JR門司港駅を中心に貿易港として栄えた当時の建造物を整備し、大正レトロ調の趣ある街並みを残しています。開港130年以上の歴史を持つ門司港は、かつては日本三大港の一つとして数えられ、明治から昭和初期にかけ発展し栄華を誇っていました。その後、欧州航路の寄港地になるなど、貿易船や客船で賑わう重要な国際貿易の拠点となっていきます。発展当時は、大手商社や銀行が先を争って門司に支店を出そうと割拠し、地価が暴騰したこともあったそうです。
戦前までは栄華を誇っていた門司の街ですが、終戦とともに大陸貿易が縮小し石炭の輸出も減り、港は低迷し次第に街全体が衰退していくことになっていきます。
その後、門司港は往時の建造物を中心に、ホテルや商業施設などを大正レトロ調に整備をすすめ、1995年に『門司港レトロ』として生まれ変わりました。今では年間200万人以上の観光客が訪れる九州有数の観光地として、新たな歴史を歩みはじめています。

Mojiko Retro is a sightseeing spot located in Moji Ward, Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, facing the Kanmon Straits. The buildings that prospered as a trading port around JR Mojiko Station have been refurbished to preserve the Taisho retro-style townscape. Mojiko, with a history of more than 130 years since its opening, was once counted as one of the three major ports in Japan, and developed and prospered from the Meiji period to the early Showa period. After that, it became a port of call on European routes, and became an important international trading base bustling with trade ships and passenger ships. At the time of its development, major trading companies and banks were eager to open branches in Moji, causing land prices to skyrocket.
Moji boasted of its prosperity before the war, but with the end of the war, the continental trade shrank, coal exports declined, and the port stagnated and the entire city gradually declined.
Mojiko Port was then reborn as “Mojiko Retro” in 1995, with the buildings of the past, hotels, commercial facilities, and other facilities being renovated in a Taisho Retro style. Today, Mojiko Port has made a new history as one of Kyushu’s leading tourist destinations, attracting more than 2 million visitors a year.
